FAQ
What is Hell On The Humber?
Hell On The Humber is a through the night endurance road race over 6 or 12 hours.
How Far Do I Have To Run?
That's up to you, the 2011 Male and Female winners completed 76 and 70 miles respectively over the 12 hours, you decide how much you want to do.
What's The Route Like?
The route is a 4 mile loop of the Humber Bridge, it's 2 miles up and 2 miles down on pavement. Very little flat to speak of.
Do I Have To Run Continuously?
No, you have either 6 or 12 hours (depending on your race entry preference) and you can split your running over the entire time available. You can take all the rest you need, or even walk a lap if you want to.
Do I Have To Be An Experienced Runner?
Not at all, many of the runners in 2011 were totally new to running, some never even having done a race or run more than 10 kilometres. Because the race is based on time, not distance, you can takes as long as you like to run or walk and take all the rest you need. One runner in 2011 completed 56 miles having only ever previously running a 5 kilometre park run!
Do I Have To Be Fit?
You don't have to be a Greek God / Goddess or a Super Hero to participate in Hell On The Humber, we just ask that you know what you're getting in to and if it's your first experience you take it easy, don't push too hard and let us know so we can keep an eye on you. Obviously you'll be participating in a 12 hours of physical activity, even walking for 12 hours is draining, so you need to be sure you're healthy and don't have any health problems which could cause you problems. Most Doctors will do a health MOT on you to check you're ok to exercise.
Can I Run As Part Of A Team?
Yes you can, relay teams of three take it in turns running throughout the event, the first place team in 2011 covered 86 miles between them! It's a great way to take part in the event without committing to do it all yourself.
Can I Bring A Support Crew?
Yes, many runners bring a support team, one or two people to pass them food and drinks, give them a bit of support and generally make life easier. You don't need a support crew though, many look after themselves with no problem at all. The event crew always give you a cheer so you've got that...
Can I Raise Money For Charity?
Absolutely! Hell On The Humber isn't a charity event, but we will do all we can to promote your cause and you're welcome to use your race as a way of raising funds for good causes. In 2011 close to £10,000 was raised by runners for a variety of charities.
Can I Bring A Tent?
Yes, there is a large admin area for competitors to pitch a tent where they can keep spare clothing, food and drink etc. We also have limited space for caravans or motor homes. There are no electricity hook ups though, so bring a torch!
What About Food & Drink?
You'll need to bring your own supplies, you'll know what you're used to and what works for you, just remember to practice with something and see what you enjoy. We will supply emergency nutrition in the form of energy bars, crisps and biscuits in case you run out of food or need something different, and we provide access to water obviously. There's also a local pizza shop who deliver - 2011 saw over £200 of pizza delivered to the site.
Who Get The Prizes?
Prizes are awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd Male and Female runners, first team and first Male and Female Extreme TAB. We're also going to throw in a prize for fancy dress in 2012.
What's This Extreme TAB You Mention?
If running 12 hours through the night isn't enough for you there's an option to do it carrying a 25 kilogramme pack. 3 completed the 2011 Extreme TAB version, the winner covering 60 miles. No lady has ever done the Extreme TAB.
What Are The Rules?
They're simple... You must complete one lap in every 3 hour block of the race, You must behave in a sportsmanlike manner at all times (no cheating or bad behaviour) and to be considered a finisher and receive the very rare finishers t shirt you have to complete a minimum of 5 hours of the 6 hour race and 11 hours of the 12 hour race. Finally, you can't take things too seriously or annoy the event crew. We don't like ego's >;)
I've Entered And Changed My Mind / Got Injured / Got Sensible, Can I Have A Refund / Give My Place Away / Carry My Place To Next Year?
Unfortunately not. Once you're in, you're in. You can choose not to race but we don't give refunds or transfer places. The majority of race funds are invested in the event before it even takes place, so if we offered refunds or transferred entries we would likely end up broke before we start, which isn't good for us or you as the race just wouldn't go ahead. So we have to be strict on this, sorry...
